  • To drink a pre-ban Absinthe from the era of Toulouse Lautrec and Van Gogh is an extraordinary and rare experience. You have the feeling of sitting in the Moulin Rouge, reaching back in time to the famous era of a distant past. Vintage Absinthe is far rarer than other vintage spirits like Cognac or Whisky.

These protein complexes are toxic to the digestive tract of many folks; it is estimated that 5% to 10% of the population (about 3 million people in the USA). In the interest of full disclosure, I should say up front that Trillium is not a very good absinthe.

The USIC’s Director of National Intelligence assigns Dr. Rebecca Boone Hildebrandt, a case officer empowered to take any necessary action, to safeguard the firm’s growing data store. Strikes, targeting key company players, force suspending operations in securing corporate infrastructure and remaining personnel. The agent responsible for covertly shepherding InterLynk responds to attacks targeting her principals; to counterbalance an attempted hostile takeover of the private company, Boone gathers her own assets: no strangers to direct action. Ranging from Switzerland through New York City to the Russian forests, the resulting covert conflict pits committed professionals from the spectrum of international intelligence against equals. The prize: technology housing intelligence that could reverse the balance of power between East and West.

In addition to the welcome return of familiar characters from 'Jon's Trilogy' and 'Sean's Cycle', Sean Ritter and General McAllen's intelligence apparatus, we meet a new super-duper secret agent, Rebecca Hildebrand Boone, a fiery red-headed secret agent who has the martial arts skills of Black Widow crossed with the suave manner of James Bond. While there are no 'superheroes' here, this book deals with the purely realistic machinations of the global intelligence commuity, this book kept me turning pages and I read it in a single day (warning, don't start this book right before bedtime!!!).

In bringing Dr. Hildebrandt to life, I found the depth of complexity and wellspring of emotion available to draw wonderfully enabling.

I believe her novels—four of them now—reflect this. The result is an archetypal, satisfying, and dynamic strong female character with growth, plot and romance arcs spanning more than three hundred and fifty thousand words. This title will be the third gateway into the common universe of my fiction. Characters from The Anvil of the Craftsman and elsewhere pop up to augment Boone’s efforts and fill out the story line. Playing central roles are Daniel Sean Ritter, Bernie Schuster, and General Peter McAllen with cameos from Jon, Mary, and Farrah. Absinthe provided a chance for me to drop back on my messaging, have some fun, and spend eighty-five-and-a-half thousand words introducing a very special personality through a kickin’ adventure.

Boone, when we meet her, concurrently is at the top of her professional game and nearing the nadir of her personal life. She is, in most instances, directly responsible for many aspects of her misery.

A life lived in secrets has left her isolated and developing an unhealthy gravitation toward alcohol. Overcompensation for loneliness, compounded by enduring, building guilt from the lives she has taken, is now a lifestyle. Offsetting needs fulfill largely through escapades in the service of her country, specifically in her capacity as a Level One Case Officer working for the Director of National Intelligence. At times, when a kindred spirit draws near enough, she finds solace in her bed as well.

By the time you finish, I strongly suspect you will realize the fun waiting ahead in three more of her titles. I found this to be a very well written, enjoyable novel from start to finish. With innovative settings and a well thought out cast of characters, the story moves along at a frenetic pace, without losing anything of the interpretation of the action.

With twists and turns galore, it is sometimes a little difficult to follow unless you are paying close attention, but it does not detract from the readability in any way. In fact, it forces you to concentrate on the details all the more. Rebecca Boone Hildebrandt is the consummate spy; capable, trustworthy and extremely adaptable to any situation, as well as smart and sexy. She is also vulnerable for several reasons, and the twist toward the end I should have seen coming, but didn’t. Thoroughly enjoyable throughout, it is an edge of your seat thriller. Well done, I look forward to the next one.

Five well deserved stars Reviewed by John Andersen for Julie’s Book Review. Another great adventure presented by Dale Amidei. I really enjoyed meeting Boone, his newest character to watch and a female at that. Love that there were 'old' friends from previous books yet this book can easily stand alone if you've missed previous books (you should go back and catch up on them though). A few twists and turns I never saw coming. I think that's one of the things I like best about his writing.

I enjoy reading Thrillers of all types, but as a woman reader it's especially enjoyable when there's a bonus of a strong female character in the story.

You will cheer her on as she does battle with both her own demons as well as the earthly ones, while remaining true to her cause. And kudos to the author for the attention to detail and obvious apt research conducted to give the reader an action-packed story that falls uncomfortably close to today's headlines of data mining, hacking and geopolitical conflicts. I look forward to the next book in the series! If you were a fan of intrigue/thrillers like I've been- from Ludlam on, read Absinthe and Chocolate. This is a great, complex read in the digital age of espionage meets terrorism. I bought the paperback, glad I did.
